The neolithic site of Federsee Alleshausen (2700-3000 BC) is a Unesco World Heritage site located in southern Germany. It was not a permanent settlement but rather a highly specialized temporary work site. Evidence suggests that people returned here in late summer, bringing freshly harvested flax to the shore to process it, fixing or rebuilding the rather flimsy huts as needed, but leaving before winter. It takes many steps to turn the harvested plant (Linum usitatissimum) into yarn or fabric, but to begin the stems have to be stored in wet conditions for some time, making the boggy lake an ideal location.
